Our team is jointly located at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Heidelberg.
We are part of a vibrant ecosystem for machine learning and computational biology in Heidelberg, which we are actively shaping. Some examples include:

The ELLIS Unit Heidelberg unifies frontier AI research with unique data resources and domain expertise to unlock new solutions to key challenges in the health and life sciences. Empowered by its strong host institutions – EMBL, DKFZ, and Heidelberg University – it connects and empowers the region’s vibrant AI community to advance impactful, interdisciplinary research.
Oliver Stegle is the director of the ELLIS Unit Heidelberg and Board Member of the ELLIS Society.

The Cross Topic for Digital Oncology at the DKFZ aims to drive the transformation of cancer research and care through novel data-centric approaches, computational methodology, advanced infrastructures and transdisciplinary collaboration. In the matrix structure of DKFZ it connects the different research topics and creates a community of data science focused groups and infrastructures.
Oliver Stegle is in the board of directors of the Cross Topic for Digital Oncology.

The German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA) is building a secure national omics data infrastructure, enabling the use of human genome data for research purposes while preventing data misuse.
Oliver Stegle is director and spokesperson of GHGA.
